2026.L.FIC.1Description
Cooper's sun plane, a specialized woodworking tool. The tool has a curved body and blade to match the contour of the barrel's inner rim. Also called a topping plane. A sun plane is used for leveling the ends of the staves after they have been beveled with a cooper's adze. The narrow ledge created by the sun plane serves to hold first the chiv and later the croze to cut the grooves on the inside of the staves to hold the cask heads. These are often made of applewood, a durable wood. Generally used from the late 1800's to early 1900's.
