Jewitt, Jr. May 22-1959 Wayne Asplin 3079 Dover Rd Bay Village- O In Re: Historical Jollies of Cahoon Park bequeathed by Laura, Lydia + Ida Cahoon Dear Sir: I saw by Cleve Press of May 25 that you are addressing Westlake Kiwanis June 9th on historical events last 149 yrs of Old Dover Twp. so here some personal tid-bits on the above maidens-never married. The writer as youngest of 6 children of late Dr. E.H. Jewitt summered on Cahoon large acreage from 1896 to about 1912 as my father was their family Dr. and kept Ida Cahoon with Bright's disease alive an extra 5 years. We built a cottage (large one) on their property across ravine from old homestead which the park now owns + rents. They had no Heirs + in their wills they gave around 500 acres to Dover Village for a Park + practically disinherited their Doctor as my boyish pranks were too much for them. Over [p. 2] 1 The religious old gals put up + still up (under their Wills) on Cahoon Beach a sign "No boating or bathing on Sunday". Every Sunday A.M. with their field glasses they checked me as a bather and if the culprit turned up in the Methodist Church my violation was condoned because I washed for the Lord. Tuf quandry each Sunday for a growing boy. 2 I built a tennis Court and a similar sign was put up which engendered a continuing feud for 15 years. 3 It was tuf as every nite I went to old Cahoon house (now the Library) for milk Ida Cahoon would cover my neck + face with kisses with loud smacking of lips - as I resembled my Doctor father - her best friend - charity on a young boy's part. Their father around 1840 rode his horse from Buffalo + staked off farm by 1st planting his Willow whip in front yard - still standing as old tree - Roger Jewitt 2000.FIC.02.270B copy
