Scope and Content

Letter from Charles H. Fowler to J.J. Cahoon from the Law and Patent Office in response to a submission for an elevator patent. 2000.FIC.02.273A Engraving of the Patent Office: Gies & Co., Buffalo, NY U.S. PATENT OFFICE Law & Patent Offices Charles H. Fowler Washington D.C. April 26 1892 J.J. Cahoon. Esq. Dear. Sir: I herewith acknowledge receipt of description and drawings in your invention of "Elevator" and have examined the models of patents relating to this class of invention without finding anything that would in my opinion debar your right to a patent. Of course you should understand that there would be no invention in placing an elevator in any particular place. The same elevator if used on land there would be nothing patentable in taking it and placing the elevator on a ship or steamboat. The invention lies in the Elevator itself and not in the manner of using it. In order to clearly show every feature of construction it will be necessary to made the drawings on three sheets which will cost $5.00 per sheet ($15.00) and upon receipt of this amount the application will be prepared and sent you for approval and execution. If the drawings do not clearly show the invention, the the Examiner at the Patent Office will require a model to be filed and that model must be artistically constructed and of durable material. Respectfully, Chas. H. Fowler 2000.FIC.02.273B. Envelope: Postmark: WASHINGTON, D.C. / APR 26 / 3-3:30P / 1892 Stamp has been removed. J.J. CAHOON 184 MAIN ST. MEMPHIS, TENN.
