Scope and Content

Newspaper article entitled, "Dover also Celebrates", reporting the celebration of the Cahoon family's 100 years at their homestead in Dover. DOVER ALSO CELEBRATES Township Observes Centen- nial with Descendents of First Settler as Guests. While thousands yesterday celebrated the Cuyahoga county centennial, a smaller but equally enthusiastic crowd gathered at the Cahoon home at Stop 24, Lakeshore Electric to celebrate jointly the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Dover Township and the appearance in that township of descendents of its first settler. The celebration was held in conjunction with the semi-Centennial reunion of the Cahoon family. Joseph Cahoon first settled in Cuyahoga county on Oct. 10, 1810, having consumed six weeks in making the trip from Vermont. At that time, Rocky River had but two inhabitants, an innkeeper and a ferryman. His son, Joel B. Cahoon, came to Dover from Cincinnati in the first carriage seen in this part of the state. His three daughters, Lydia, Laura and Ida, were the hostesses to the crowd to 250. Rev. F.W. Luce of the First Methodist Church of Cleveland made the principle address, drawing attention to the hard struggle for existence that the early settlers faced and the need for early perseverance on the part of the men today. Miss Laura Cahoon recounted the history of the Cahoon family while Reuben Hall and Judge D.J. Nye of Elyria, O., game reminiscences of the early days of the county. Solos were rendered by Walter E. Wright and Miss Mary E. Ligget. An excellent dinner comprised largely of the delicacies of earlier times, was served.
