Scope and Content

Newspaper article celebrating the Centennial of Avon. The celebration included a family reunion for the Founder, Wilber Cahoon. A number of descendents attended and are named later. Wilbur came from Salisbury, NY and they passed through Buffalo where they saw the smoking ruins told the tale of the War of 1812. Four days before they arrived on September 10, Francis Scott Keys wrote the "Star Spangled Banner." In December they had a baby boy, Leonard, who was the first child of Avon. It was the happy thought of his daughter, Mrs. Susan Cahoon Jameson, who lives on the original farm, to gather the numerous descendents of her grandfather, her other relatives and many friends at Beach Park on Thursday, September 10, 1914. About 300 responded to the invitation. Four grandsons were present, H.J. Cahoon of Elyria; Levi Cahoon of Baraboo, Wis.; Joseph Cahoon of Avon and Elbert Cahoon of Waterville, Ia. Six granddaughters were present, they were Mrs. Lodema Mason Poyer of Berlin Heights, Ohio; Mrs. Hulda Cahoon Nesbet, of Baraboo, Wis.; Mrs. Priscilla Stile Swartwood, of Vermillion, O.; Mrs. Hannah Titus Miller, of Avon Lake, O.; Mrs. Susan Cahoon Jamison of Avon and Mrs. Harriet Cahoon Gibson of Cleveland. The Cahoon for centuries have been Baptists
