THOUSANDS OF PUPILS MOURN AGED TEACHER
"Now before we work today,
We will not forget to pray
To God, who kept us thru the night,
And waked us with the morning light."
...when in first grade at school, "they used to say the verse daily with their teacher. The teacher was Miss Cahoon.
...Miss Cahoon began teaching in Cleveland schools about forty-seven years ago. She taught in Charter Oak, Union, Barkwill and Detroit schools for 36 years and in school at Dover, Avon and Sheffield for eight years before she came to Cleveland.
When Miss Cahoon resigned as teacher in Detroit School two years ago she said:
"I'll miss the voices of the children. I always taught the first grade except for one year when I took the second."
Miss Cahoon kept a flag always above the door of her schoolroom. Every morning the children saluted it and gave the pledge of allegiance.
"A child's earliest lesson should be in patriotism." she said.
Miss Cahoon once gave this advice to young teachers:
"Never to into the work of preparing a child for life simply as a means of making a living. Unless you love children and love to work with children, your place isn't with them. A little girl or boy is the most precious thing in the world."Collection
