*Noted in email from Brien Kinkel- Francis Cardinal Spellman celebrated the mass. Bobby Kelly is in one of the pictures. He served in the Army, and was a childhood friend of my dad and Billy Banks (William F. Banks). Bill was a year behind my dad (Jack Kinkel). I don't know what year Bobby Kelly was, but he was probably a classmate of either my dad or Bill Banks. The three of them attended Bedford District School #2. My dad never talked much about that school, to my regret. Banks and Kelly were my dad's best man and groomsman when my parents got married in November, 1953.
My dad and Bill served as altar boys at St. Patrick's for many years, getting their Latin instruction from Annie O'Brien. Punctuality was at that time not one of Bill's strong suits, earning him the nickname among the altar boys The Late Billy Banks. When my dad was a kid, indeed when I was a kid, Washington and Lincoln each got official holidays on their birthdays. One day the teacher asked, "And whose birthday is it on February 12th?" That was an easy one. "Billy Banks!" his pals proclaimed.
