FIC.2024.22.1Description
White quartz from the Kinkle Quarry – located off Middle Patent Road and backing up to Baylis Lane.
Donated by Americo Ascenzi who was the Bedford Historical Society Properties Manager for years. His father and mother immigrated from Italy in the early 20th century and his father worked at the quarry as many Italian immigrants did. Rico’s dad was illiterate but his mother was not and she made sure her children were educated – they lived in Bedford Hills and attended Bedford Hills High School – where the elementary school is now.
When he married his wife Lillian Perez, Rico bought land on Greenwich road and built his own house there. It was sold when Rico died a few years ago.
His daughter, Valerie, has worked in a hair salon in Bedford almost her entire life. She raised her family in Bedford Hills and still works at Bedford Village Hair Design.
