Response from Jac Weller in a letter from Dorothy Hinnitt inquiring identification of a cannon found on Guard Hill Road in a swamp.
He responded with probabilities: Because it was iron he thought it could have been used aboard ship, If it were brass it could have possibly been mounted on a galloper carriage as was made in the colonies at that time. He thought it could have been used by either side. It was like other cannons used in the Revolution.
He believed two scenarios could have happened: It may have been sunk a few inches in the swamp to avoid capture as Tarleton approached Bedford or Tarleton may have captured the piece and disposed of by dropping in the swamp. He could not give an authoritative identification.
