2007.6.1Description
Coffee Mill by the Enterprise Manufacturing Company, Philadelphia. Patent date of 1873, model #2,
Unlike today where many grinders are electronic, the 19th century customer would have ground their coffee by cranking two wheels by hand. The grounds would be distributed into the small tray at the bottom. Large floor-standing and counter-model coffee mills were introduced into the general store in the 1870s, patented in 1870 by John Gulick Baker of Philadelphia (Champion #1). Two-wheel models like this were also commonly used at the store, as models for the home were not widely available until the end of the century.
