Description

Wedding dress, c. 1882, the basque bodice of ivory silk ottoman, fastening down the front with crocheted ball buttons, sewn at one hip with scallop shell carved mother of pearl button, trimmed down one side of the bodice with seed pearl and larger pearl applique, the bodice attached in back with Watteau pleat forming long train, the train sewn to the skirt, the skirt of white patterned silk brocade woven with a design of roses, trimmed with an intricate ruched band of the same ottoman as the bodice, underskirt with lace trimmed dust ruffle, the second band of pearl applique separate, very good condition. Worn by Alice Bessie Norrish at her marriage to Gilbert George Thorn of St. Paul, Minnesota, great grandmother of Mrs. Peter Whitman
