Tinware was made by dipping sheets of steel or iron in molten tin. Tinsmiths would use this material to make various domestic objects for practical use and play. These objects were called toleware when the tinplate was coated with asphaltum (coal by-product) mixed with varnish and baked to make the tin suitable for painting.
