Description

This wooden post from Hyde Park Plantation once marked the resting place of an enslaved woman named Lucia. Lucia lived and worked at the 600-acre Hyde Park Planation. Today she is buried in Hyde Park’s slave cemetery. Like most enslaved people, little is known of Lucia’s life. The Ball family’s decision to mark Lucia’s grave may indicate she held a favored position, possibly as a house slave. Lucia died at age 58 in 1862. In the early 2000s, the wooden marker was replaced with a marble one, and the wooden marker was donated to the Museum.
