Parish Line Marker - St. Johns/St. Stephens

Entry/Object ID

Use

Granite marker used to delineate the boundary between St. John's and St. Stephen's parishes. St. John's Berkeley was one of the original ten parishes of South Carolina; St. Stephen's parish was taken from its northeastern portion in 1754. Both parishes were dissolved into Berkeley County when the parish system ended in 1865.

Context

This marker was originally located by Woodlawn Plantation, which was near modern-day Pinopolis. When Woodlawn was going to be moved for the Santee Cooper Hydroelectric Project, the parish line marker was also moved. The marker was relocated to Pineville for a number of years before being moved to Biggin Church and finally to the grounds of the Museum.
