Scope and Content

Summary: Lucy A. Fahey lived at 1732 Carleton Street in Berkeley from 1927 until her death around 1950. As a divorced woman, she raised four children: Alex “Lex” Fahey, James “Jim” D. Fahey, William “Bill” Fahey, and Leona “Lee” Buckley later referred to as Leona White. The letters in this collection provide insight into the lives of the Fahey family as Lex and Jim corresponded with Lucy and Leona while traveling and living abroad. This collection most closely covers the years 1945-1951 and offers insight into the financial realities and prices of the post-war period. Fahey kept records of her monthly expenses including milk deliveries, utility bills, retail invoices, and bank statements. Tax documents and deeds for the property at 1732 Carleton Street are also included. The processes of selling the home and settling of Lucy’s estate after her death are greatly detailed through letters between Leona and James in 1951.
