Spring Mansion (1912). View from Arlington Avenue; electric lines in view. The John Hopkins Spring Estate occupies 3.25 acres in the Southampton area of the north Berkeley Hills. Initially covering 16 acres, the property has 3 addresses: 1960 San Antonio Ave., 1984 San Antonio Ave., and 639 Arlington Avenue. Modeled after Empress Elizabeth of Austria’s Achillion Palace in Corfu, the 12,000 sq ft mansion was designed by John Hudson Thomas. In 1917 Spring sold it to Cora L. Williams, who made it a school. It was designated a City of Berkeley Landmark in 2000.
