Helmet for Berkeley Fire Department, possibly from 1923 fire. Helmet is made of a lightweight metal, possibly aluminum, shaped in a ribbed dome over the head with a wide brim to cover the back of the neck. It is covered with a thick layer of red paint, blistered and cracked to the texture of alligator skin, with black discolorations around the cracks. An eagle head protrudes from the top of the helmet to support a thin metal shield in silver and gold color (brass). Shield is printed "Asst Foreman Hose" with a large number "2" and underneath "BFD". There is a loop for hanging the hat on the brim. Inside the helmet is a canvas lining with a drawstring to fit it to the head. A label is sewn on the inside of the helmet "Pettibone Mfg Co, Military and Society Goods, Cincinnati."Lexicon
