Description

Flat, lightweight wooden box with wire hinges used by Julia Morgan. Contains three parallel trays lined with corrugated paper and grey fibrous packing material. Artist's chalk pastels fit inside each paper corregation. About 1/2 filled. Covered with a layer of fibrous packing material. Inside cover has manufacturer's information & name stamped on it "Girault" , a paper label "Distributed by Duncan, Vail Co., Los Angeles" and some penciled numbers. On the outside of the box on the lid is a small stamp "made in France". Enclosed in the box is a 2 page note dated 10/3/96 from Karen Pillsbury McMahon, explaining how her family came to possess the pastels. Her grandparents had bought Julia Morgan's house in Monterey, CA in the 1950's and the pastels were still in the "studio". Note is missing (after exhibiting). No longer in the box. (J. Wilkes 2018)
