Description

Voting machine "Game of Chance": rectangular wood box with 53 white glass, marble-sized balls, one larger red glass ball and 3 (originally 4) black cubes the size of the red ball. The box is of dark wood with a thick base and a turned wood handle on one of the shorter ends. The top does not have a full lid, but a sliding panel with finger holes that covers and obscures only 1/2 of the box at a time. In the center of the box is a 3-part divider panel. One side of the panel has a cup that leads into a hole to the other side. The other side has a small sliding piece that covers either the round hole or the space that would be covered by the bottom 1/4 of the divider panel. Of the white glass marble sized balls, 3 are markedly larger than the others. The balls have a slightly irregular surface. Balls and cubes dropped in the cup will fall through the hole to the other side. Bottom is lined with green twill cloth. Label on the bottom of box: B. Pasquale & Co., "ARMY, NAVY & SOCIETY....FLAGS BADGES BANNERS CARS UNIFORMS." No description of how the box/game was used or played. Used during the Spanish-American War and by the Vets...found in the Veteran's Building. Note written on a 1973 program inside: "McCourt Camp Post (Berkeley). In use at Vet Building, maybe for black balling applicants for membership?"
