Scope and Content

This collection documents the community organization, “A Dream For Berkeley,” initiated by Berkeley activist Carol Sibley and a group of Berkeley citizens in 1970. The organization’s name and mission was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech. Organizational notes, correspondence, and pamphlets describe the organization as a diverse group of people of all age, racial, and cultural backgrounds who are engaged in improving the social and physical wellbeing of Berkeley. These materials emphasize the organization’s goal to celebrate diversity, build unity, and increase civic engagement through activities such as potlucks, garden parties, meetings, and workshops. While the organization’s primary focus was to address the needs of local neighborhoods and community in Berkeley (e.g. housing, jobs, schools, desegregation, and mental health), there are also materials addressing broader national and global political concerns of the time.
