Description

Clay campaign button in the shape of a star: "GUS." Campaign button for Eugene (Gus) Newport who served as mayor 1979-1986. Button probably made by Julius Seitz. Gus Newport had the backing of Berkeley Citizens Action—progressives, radicals and reformers. He had ties to the Socialist Workers Party and Communist Party. He went on to serve as U.S. Peace Council Co-Chairperson 1983-85 and was elected honorary chair of Democratic Socialists of America in 1999. He spoke at the Conference on Perspectives for Democracy and Socialism (held in 1992 in Berkeley). He was active in the Progressive Alliance of Alameda Co. (1996-), the anti-Iraq war movement (2002-), Free Mumia Abu-Jamal (2008-) and many other organizations.
