Description

Round, pink/orange, metal and paper campaign button: "Vote JERRY RUBIN Mayor --A New Community". Around the edge: "withdraw from Vietnam, rent control, end police harassment, eliminate poverty". Jerry Rubin (b:1938 d:1994) ran for mayor in 1967 and received 20% of the vote. He was a high-profile social activist in the 60's (radicalized by the Vietnam antiwar protests, supported black power and was a founding member of the Youth International Party i.e. Yippies, along with Abbie Hoffman.) He appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee, used guerilla theatre and out of the 1968 Democratic National Convention became one of the Chicago Eight (Seven) in 1969. He retired from politics and became a businessman and author in the 1970's.
