Wooden Shogi game board (image also shows tiles. See 2017.015.007 for info on set of 41 hand-carved wooden tiles). Board was made in a Japanese internment camp during WWII. Board has 81 squares carved out (9 x 9 each way) and sits on 4 legs. There is a small hollowed out space underneath...for sound effects. The game was used after the war by evacuees who temporarily stayed at a house at 1813 University Avenue in Berkeley. The inscription on the back says it was made at the Gila River camp in Arizona.
Game has similarities to chess.
