Rev. Samuel Willey Home
S.H. Willey born on March 11, 1821, in Campton, NH. In 1853, he and the Rev. Henry Durant founded the Contra Costa Academy as a school for young men seeking higher education. Two years later, the Academy was incorporated into the College of California with Willey and Durant actively raising money to support the young college. On April 16, 1860, a meeting was held on what is known as “Founders rock” located on a hillside north of Oakland where there was plenty of land to grow; today it is known as the Berkeley campus. The Willey house was built in 1865. June 9 1868, the College of California deeded to the Regents of the University of California, 168 acres of land in Berkeley” and the four city blocks. Willey served as vice president of the college from 1850-1872 and offered the benediction at Berkeley’s first commencement in 1873.Made/Created
