Description

During the South African apartheid era, the Boer War Cemetery on Long Island in the Great Sound was neglected, but in 1997, thanks to the efforts of David Lines, Andrew Bermingham, Bermuda National Trust and the South African government, funds were donated towards the cemetery’s renovation. A team of Bermudians led by Stanley Hodgson replaced all the broken and crumbling headstones. The two markers on display were salvaged from the remains.

BOER GRAVE MARKER 22. The headstone numbered 22 is in memory of 65-year-old Hendrik Albertus SCHOEMAN, of the Bronkhorstspruit Commando, captured in Roodeburg on June 2, 1901 and sent to Bermuda from Ladysmith. He died of a brain disorder on March 30, 1902. Hendrik was one of 64 prisoners over the age of 65 held in Bermuda; the eldest was 78. [The Colin Benbow Gallery].
