CEDAR QUEEN ANNE CHAIR, circa 1710-1750. The first of a pair (see below). With well-developed vase back splat. The crest rail has a dished (concave) section rounded to a thin top edge. This chair, and its partner (described below), are unique in Bermuda in that only these among Bermuda-made chairs of the period retain the earlier lower back rail above the seat rail (later chairs having the back splats received on the seat rail). The rear stretcher is turned and set slightly above the H stretcher which is placed well forward of centre. (Some Philadelphia-made chairs of the same period have a flat 'serpentine' stretcher). The cabriole legs are squarish in section the high (4.5") Spanish feet are without the bracelet above them sometimes found with English and American 'Spanish' feet. The scalloped seat rail continues. Only this model - and that described below - are known in Bermuda to have 'bast' slip seats (in woven palmetto). Measures 18 FW (15 BW) x 13 D x 41 3/8 H; 18.5 H.
