Cedar chest-on-frame. Circa 1770-1800. In the Chippendale style. The Chinese Chippendale style became popular in England in the 1760s. It showed up in Bermuda as the square legs and fretted corner brackets shown on this particular chest, which also has a scalloped apron. With much dovetail detail. However, this chest is unusual in that it also has a single wide drawer in the frame.

1992.11.08 CEDAR CHEST-ON-FRAME, WITH SQUARE LEGS. Circa 1770-1800. In the Chippendale style. The Chinese Chippendale style became popular in England in the 1760s. It showed up in Bermuda as the square legs and fretted corner brackets shown on this particular chest, which also has a scalloped apron. With much dovetail detail. However, this chest is unusual in that it also has a single wide drawer in the frame. Chest itself is 50" L x 21.5" W x 17" deep. Frame is 48.5" L x 21.25 " H x 18.5" deep. This chest was in the North Exhibition Room adjacent to the Reference Library until it had to make way for new display cases. B. Hist. S. 23. Now it is in the Stockroom.
