After an original in the Bargello, 13th-century palace in Florence Italy. The design is reputed to have been by Benvenuto Cellini. This particular model probably dates from the middle of the 18th century.
Bargello Palace houses the National Museum. Once the residence of the highest city official but later used as a prison and as the office of the Chief of Police (bargello). It was restored (1857) to receive the art treasures of the city. Giotto’s frescoes, with the famous portrait of Dante, are in the Chapel. The Bargello is famous for its courtyard and its Renaissance sculptures, including Michelangelo’s David and works by Verrocchio, Donatello, Cellini and others.
