Royal Ruby Candlestick

Name/Title

Royal Ruby Candlestick

Description

Candlestick with a short stalk and wide bowl at the bottom. The top of the stalk extends out, forming a flat, circular platform with a petaled edges. Vertical indented lines run down the stalk, ending in a ring of raised circles. Beneath the ring of circles are two circular ridges, the bottom one being much larger than the first. Beneath these ridges is a flat circular platform, and the shape bells out from there. The outer side of the bowl has a pattern running around it with 6 raised triangular sections that are equidistant from one another. On the inside of each triangle are three raised dots that get smaller as they come to the tip of the triangle. On top of the triangles is a raised ovular shape, that extends slightly over the bottom edge of the object.

Notes

In 1938 the Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation started production of a new type of red glass named Royal Ruby, in which the deep red color was achieved by the addition of cuprous (copper) oxide to the molten glass rather than gold chloride. Eliminating gold from the process reduced the costs but the manufacturing process was still exacting, and Royal Ruby glassware was still generally not made in large quantities.
