Historical Note

Note

The bottles in this collection are from the sixty-fun French frigate L’HERMINIE, wrecked on the western reefs on December 3, 1838. Most of these bottles are French with a small percentage English and Dutch. Three-piece and two-piece molds were developed in the 1820’s and are much in evidence in this collection, as well as a few free blown that have survived from an earlier period, or even the possibility that the bottle makers were still using the free blown method. The purpose of these two exhibits (L’Herminie & Lord Amherst Bottle Cases) is to reveal the evolution of the art of glass blowing in the making of bottles during a sixty-year period.
