Description

A metal button the number "24" in the center.

Context

The donor identified this as a 24th regiment button which means it could be from a member of a British regiment of light foot soldiers who advanced south from Quebec on Lake Champlain under Gen. John Burgoyne during the Revolutionary War. This British Army had failed to receive new uniforms in 1777, so had to mend and patch what they had -- which might make it easy to lose a button. The U.S. Army also had a 24th regiment that existed from 1869 to 1951 and was made up of black soldiers, so this button is unlikely to be from that unit.
