Context

Vergennes City Hall and Opera House, 120 Main St. This brick and marble structure was built in 1897 for two purposes that continue today — to house the city's offices on the first floor and an opera house on the second. The building was designed and engineered by Thomas F. Chappell and Arthur H. Smith of Rutland during their brief partnership. The building hosted two U.S. Presidents: James Garfield and Herbert Hoover. The Vergennes Opera House was restored in 1994 and hosts musicians, plays, films and other community events. The stage has a hand-painted canvas stage curtain.
