Context

Fort Cassin was a hastily constructed earthworks for seven cannon built in 1813 at the mouth of the Otter Creek in Ferrisburgh. It was intended to defend the Naval Shipyard upriver in Vergennes from British Naval forces on Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. The earthworks were abandoned after the war, but in the 1820s Jahaziel Sherman, a steamboat captain and businessman based in Vergennes, built a boat landing, storehouse and hotel on the point where the fort had been located. The location continued to be called Fort Cassin.
