Description

Silver coin worth five cents withthat has the image of a buffalo on one side and the side view of a Native American on the other.

Context

The Buffalo nickel was designed by James Earle Fraser, a sculptor, in 1912 and produced in mints in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco from 1913 to 1938. It turned out to be difficult to produce with the image often indistinct and the dates wearing off easily. (See information sheet in accession file for more details.
