Description

This ficáw rattle is a striking example of how sound can be generated through layered construction rather than internal resonance alone. A smooth gourd forms the body of the instrument, while the wider end is enclosed within a net threaded with numerous small wooden pieces. When the instrument is shaken, those elements strike against the surface of the gourd and against one another, producing a dense, textured percussive sound. The result is rhythm created not from a hidden interior, but from an active outer skin of movement and contact. What gives the object its power is the contrast between its two formal zones. The lower portion of the gourd is uninterrupted, elegant, and sculpturally smooth, while the upper portion becomes visually dense and tactile through the web of attached wooden pieces. This opposition between calm surface and animated exterior gives the instrument both acoustic and visual complexity. The netting is not merely a practical device; it is the structural system through which the rattle’s sound and character emerge. As an object, the ficáw rattle embodies an especially refined relationship between natural material and crafted design. The gourd preserves its organic fullness, while the suspended wooden elements introduce rhythm, repetition, and ornament across the surface. Even at rest, the instrument suggests motion through its clustered textures and suspended forms. It stands as both a percussion instrument and a sculptural composition, demonstrating how traditional instrument-making can transform simple materials into objects of remarkable sonic richness and visual sophistication.
