This buggy was built by Daniel Saylor Thomas, who was a member of the Church of the Brethren. D.S. was born April 19, 1865, in the Beaver Creek area to Elder Daniel and Elizabeth Thomas. Elder Daniel Thomas of Beaver Creek was a Church of the Brethren pastor.
D.S. opened his carriage shop in 1891 in Bridgewater, VA. The carriage factory included a blacksmithing and ironing shop, painting and finishing shop, showrooms, office, woodworking department, and handle factory. In 1915, he started selling automobiles. D.S. Thomas organized the Bridgewater Plow Corporation and invented the Leader garden plow, which was patented in 1904, and was the owner of the D.S. Thomas Cannery. He and his wife, Barbara (Miller), had three children, Eva (Flory), Bertha (Huffman), and Leonard Thomas.
This buggy is donatd in memory of the donor's father, Marion J. Flory, and her grandmother, Eva Thomas Flory - D.S. Thomas's grandson and daughter.Cataloged By
