"Unfortunately, I know very little about the history of the coverlets. My mother gave them to me in the late 1970s. I don't recall her sharing any details about the coverlets other than that they were family pieces. I think that they came from at least one generation before hers. My mother was Erma Ruth Sheets Wood, born in Weyers Cave, Virginia in 1923. She died in 1995. Her father was Walter A. Sheets and her mother was Lena Ruth Hawkins Sheets. I believe the coverlets are from the Hawkins side of the family, but I don't know this for certain. My understanding is that both the Sheets and the Hawkins families came from Germany. Both families were Church of the Brethren."
