"My father told of how his mother would sit by the fireplace and knit with her eyes shut, maybe sleeping. My grandmother Thomas remembered that during the Civil War her mother had knit the stockings for the next year and had them hanging on a rack upstairs in their home. The soldiers came through the house and took all the stockings and socks."
