Name/Title
Dan StewartDescription
Dan R. Stewart was a geologist with the Missouri Geological Survey and a graduate of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (now Missouri University of Science and Technology). In 1942, while investigating clay deposits near Glen Allen in Bollinger County, he was alerted by the Chronister family to large, unusual bones uncovered during well digging. Stewart recognized the fossils as dinosaur remains, collected them, and arranged for their study at the Smithsonian Institution. He co‑authored the first scientific description of the species with paleontologist Charles W. Gilmore in 1945, making it the first documented dinosaur discovery in Missouri.
