02 Mildred Bess Shell Interview - Growing up in Bollinger County - Video 2
Scope and Content
The Bess farm was near the Shrum Community. There were few paved roads and few bridges, so if you had a car every trip was an adventure. Most people traveled by horse, mule, wagon or on foot so any trip took a lot of time. The electric power grid was not connected to rural homes yet and very few had indoor plumbing but many of them did have telephones. Rural life required a lot of work and self reliance and that "life style" helped them survive the Great Depression.
