Description

Oil painting on plywood of flowers, pink, white and yellow in a white vase with blue decoration. Vase is vertical turned spool shape. Vase sits on the corner of a brown table. At object right is inkstand with three glass round containers with black lids on a flat stand with black vertical pole-like handle. At object right can be seen the back of a chair which is pushed under the table. The face of the chair back is brown with vertical slat back, plain rectanguloid cross piece and upright. In background is the brown floor with green and brown steps at object left, wall at object right. Printed signature in brown in upper object right corner: FREDERIC CLAY BARTLETT//. Varnished. In gilt plaster and wooden frame with beaded molding at center, raised leafy edge. Original frame. Artist: FCB. Title: Flowers. Ca 1946 or before. On white sticker with blue printing on back of board: ATTACH TO BACK OF EXHIBIT/THE NATIONAL ARTS CLUB/15 GRAMERCY PARK, NEW YORK/SUMMER EXHIBITION/JUNE 26 TO SEPT. 27, 1946/NAME FREDERIC C BARTLETT/ADDRESS "WHITE HALL" BEVRLY, MASS/TITLE FLOWERS/PRICE 200//. Written in chalk on back of board: NAT. ARTS/WH//. White sticker torn off back of frame (illegible). Collected at artist's studio in Beverly, Mass. This painting appeared in a 1946 exhibit at the National Arts Club,15 Gramercy Park, New York City.
