Description

Oil sketch on canvas depicts Evelyn Fortune Bartlett sitting in front of a fireplace. She has yellow skin, black hair, and wears a long white gown. Object left side of canvas has been left blank (?). Primed with white over gray. Stenciled in black on at least two sides of stretcher: ??TE STRETCHER/MADE BY/?&?/BOSTON, MASS./21 (29) on one side. Artist F.C. Bartlett. Untitled. Collected at White Hall, artist's home in Bevelry, Mass. This is a study for another painting. It is a preliminary exploratory work that was made before beginning the final painting. Comparing the painted study with the final completed work you will see differences in the details such as composition and color choices. Mrs. Bartlett said in an interview that she "brought the marble fireplace from Indianpolis."
