Scope and Content

Leonard Atkison was born September 1, 1907, in Eldon, Missouri, and was educated in the same state. Leonard followed construction work throughout his career and came to Boulder City in 1933. He worked for four years at Boulder Dam, including one year for the Bureau of Reclamation. After his back was injured on the job, he entered into business with his wife, Corene, who had bought out a circulation library and an Indian souvenir store where she had been employed. The store was later renamed the Nava-Hopi Shop, and the Desertwear women’s clothing store was opened in 1947 next door on Nevada Highway. After the war, the two stores were moved to a new building on Arizona Avenue. Always active in community affairs, Leonard was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving as president in 1939; charter member and president of the Black Canyon Country Club (golf); chairman of the Red Cross drive in 1944 and the War Bond drive in 1945. Joining the Rotary in January 1938, he served as president in 1944-45. Named to the Boulder City Advisory council in 1954, he served as a member of the charter drafting committee, and was chairman of the local planning commission. In 1961 he was appointed to the Eldorado Valley Advisory group by Governor Grant Sawyer. As a member of the State Planning Board, Leonard was instrumental in the State of Nevada Children’s Home being brought to Boulder City. He died January 1, 1969. [acc no. 001.70]
