Scope and Content

The U.S. Bureau of Mines began operating an electrometallurgical pilot plant in Boulder City in 1936 under a government appropriation to investigate the industrial applications of Hoover Dam power. The plant was active until June 1, 1984, when it was closed after nearly 50 years. For a more detailed history of the Bureau of Mines plant in Boulder City, refer to "In the Beginning: A History of Boulder City, Nevada," by Dennis McBride [Boulder City, NV: Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, 1992 (2nd edition),pp. 88-92]. MS 26 includes invoices and correspondence relative to the construction of the Bureau of Mines' administration building in 1940-42; reports on the plant's Boulder City experiments, 1946-67; and mounted photographs which constitute part of photo collection 0022 [photo numbers 0001-0113]. * * *
