U. S. Bureau of Mines Collection - C-558-BC Hydraulic Press for Powder Metallurgy

0022:0146: U. S. Bureau of Mines Collection - C-558-BC Hydraulic Press for Powder Metallurgy ["Some metals are so reactive or have such a high melting points that they either cannot be cast satisfactorily or else only with greatest difficulty. Such metals can often be formed into objects of simple shape by the powder metallurgy technique. To do this, the metal, in powdered form, is loaded into a mold or die having a cavity the size and shape of the object desired. Then through application of great force, by a press such as that shown above, the powder is compressed and consolidated into a metallic compact which has the exact shape and size of the cavity in the die. This press is capable of exerting a force of 2,000 tons."] [duplicate of 0022:0101, 0103a, and 0262]
