US Bureau of Mines Collection - C-693-1-C Opening the Reaction Chamber: The joint between the lid and body of the iron reduction chamber in which crude titanium is made is closed by the light weld. After the reduction has been completed and the chamber has cooled, it is laid on its side on a rolling machine and the weld is ground off with a swing-frame grinder, in the manner shown in the photograph. Experience has shown that a welded joint of this type is more reliable than a bolted joint and also requires less time to close and open. The chamber being opened produces about 230 pounds of titanium per batch.
