US Bureau of Mines Collection - C-766-BC Vacuum Furnaces and Retorts for Purification of Crude Sponge: Five vacuum furnaces have been installed and five remain to be completed. These pot furnaces are electrically heated and are operated with a high vacuum both within the furnace and in the retort. Control panels and accessory equipment are mounted under the mezzanine. The two retorts at the right have just been charged and are ready to be placed in the furnaces whose tops are flush with the mezzanine floor. The two in the left foreground are ready for discharging. Each retort has its own vacuum pump. These furnaces are of newer design and are larger than the experimental furnaces shown in C-825-BC.
