Spinning wheels are devices for spinning thread or yarn from fibers. They were fundamental to the textile industry prior to the industrial revolution. Spinning wheels laid the foundation for later machinery such as the spinning jenny and spinning frame.
The basic spinning of yarn involves taking a clump of fibers and teasing a bit of them out, then twisting them into a basic string. The spinner continues to pull and twist the yarn in this manner to make it longer while controlling the thickness.
