Scope and Content

33 1/3 Audio record titled "Rio Grande to Silverton," containing train sound recordings, circa 1960. The record was published by North Jersey Recordings, Maplewood, New Jersey. Its LP number is LP-1136. The jacket is 12" x 12," card board, with a black and white illustration of a #476 Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad train traveling on a narrow gauge line in a mountain landscape, with a water tower to its left. The caption, "A Sound Portrait of Mountain Railroading" is at the bottom. The reverse side of the jacket has a black and white photograph image of a narrow gauge train heading down tracks between mountainous terrain, with the caption "And Sounds of Narrow Gauge Freight in Action" at the bottom. The interior record sleeve has a reproduction of a 1907 Denver and Rio Grande timetable printed on it, made from the Robert W. Richardson Collection of the Colorado Railroad Museum. The jacket opens to reveal a background history of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, descriptions of the record contents, and record credits, along with photograph images of more trains. The record itself contains a recording of a train trip along the narrow gauge line of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad starting May 29, 1960, from Durango to Silverton, over the course of several days. Sounds recorded include conductor/engineer calls, train whistles, locomotive engine running, trains making bends, and more. The jacket interior describes the trip by record side and bands.
