Scope and Content

A large map titled "Map to the West" showing the Burlington Route and other rail lines in the Western United States, 1949. the map has two wooden rods at top and bottom ends for hanging like a chart. The map is paper, 3.5' x 5,' color. The square Burlington Route logo is visible in the lower right corner and upper right corner of the map. The inscription "Centennial Cutoff - the line from Brookfield to Birmingham, Missouri - Under Construction in 1949" is at the bottom of the map. The lower left corner lists the publisher as Chicago, Burlington & Quincy R.R. Co., stating "A Copy of This Map May Be Had for $2.00." Passenger Traffic Manager A. Cotsworth, Jr., Freight Traffic Manager-System H.L. Ford, and Vice President-Traffic L.R. Capron are also listed. The company address is shown as 547 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago. The Burlington lines are shown in black from Illinois to California, and down to Texas; other rail lines are shown in different colors from Southern Canada down to Northern Mexico, and as far East as Missouri and Mississippi. The map also shows several major cities and other landmarks, such as Yellowstone National Park.
